Description
2013 album from Steve Strange and his New Romantic friends, their first studio album in 29 years. Hearts & Knives is not only a paraphrased lyric from the lead single 'Shameless Fashion', but also a metaphor for the past 29 years of Steve Strange and Visage. Life is always mixture of trials, highs and lows. The sound of Hearts & Knives is classic Visage, with the odd tip of the hat to modern production values. Most '80 s groups reforming and making albums shy away from using the classic analogue hardware synthesizers. They remember how much work it was, and it's all plug ins and software these days. Not Visage. All synthesizers on the album (aside from one bassline) are analogue. The production by John Bryan and analogue synthesizer collector Sare Havlicek is firmly rooted in the '80 s.

I was worried that Steve Strange might feel compelled to "update" the sound of Visage with this, their first release in what seems like forever. Or that it was just another feeble attempt by an 80s icon to profit off the fond memories of his fans.I was thrilled that it was neither! Strange not only wanted to keep things as they were, but actually made an effort to use equipment from their heyday (one article stated that nothing was used that was built after 1986!); and it is clear that a lot of effort went into making this as good (if not better) than any Visage production in the past. The result is an excellent album! These songs will take you back, fond memories of when music was an art and musicians had talent. Yeah, I know I sound like one of those old farts who can't let the 80s go; but why would I? Music was considerably better than as proven by the fact that many of the artists from that era are still enjoying a strong following (check out the UK's 80s Rewind festivals if you don't believe me!).So what should you, the Visage fan, expect from this new album? Classic Visage! There is no reason to hesitate, it is definitely worth the money. Every song is a danceable, rhythmic melody up to the original Visage standards. It sounds more like it was made in 1983 instead of 2013. Sure, Rusty, Midge and Billy may be missing; but the sound is still there and you honestly won't know the difference. Five out of five stars, and I only hope we don't have to wait another 30 years for the next Visage release!
